A walk for 2 alongside the river Aven

Logo Bretagne

The Aven is one of those rias where time almost seems to stand still. The river flows through a natural setting and a relaxing atmosphere. For Valentine's Day, a walk for two along the GR (the coastal path) is the perfect way to relax and get away from it all!

L'Aven, an inspiring ria

The painters made no mistake when they settled in Pont-Aven in the 19th century. Emerging from the tumult of the chaos and dams of the mills in the market town of Pont-Aven, the river becomes peaceful, tucked away in its valley. But rather than following its natural course, which flows into the sea between the Pointe de Penquernéo in Riec-sur-Bélon and the charming port of Port Manec'h, let's head inland from the ocean.

L'Aven se jette dans l'océan entre Port Manec'h et la pointe de Penquernéo, à Riec-sur-Bélon.

The best views over the Aven

From the little port of Rosbras, take the GR®34 towards Pont-Aven. This part of the coastal path was closed for a very long time, as if one of the most beautiful panoramas of Destination Quimperlé les rias had to be hidden from view.

Reopened in summer 2023, this brand new trail is well worth the effort. Whether you're a walker or a trail walker, the coastal path is the perfect playground for lovers of nature and discovery. Around 3km long, it leads to the little chapel of Trémor on the edge of the cove of the same name. A family of swans can regularly be seen here, proof that this is a very peaceful and unspoilt area. For the more courageous, you can continue on to the small town of Pont-Aven before turning back.

A moment for two on the banks of the river Aven

Now it's time to head back. The path offers views and rocky promontories over the river where you can rest and contemplate, if only for a moment, the beauty of the place.

Cormorants, gulls, egrets and birds of prey mingle in the air, creating an impromptu ballet that adds to the bucolic atmosphere of this walk. Less steep than its neighbours, the ria de l'Aven has a 'southern' feel to it, with pine trees dotting the entire route. Combined with the colour of the water, you'd almost forget you were in southern Finistère.

Back on the quays of the port of Rosbras, it's time for a coffee or tea at the Bistrot de Rosbras. Or an aperitif, depending on the time of day...

Le port de Rosbras propose de nombreux mouillages sur l'Aven.

Stay a little longer in Riec-sur-Bélon, where one of the best addresses in Destination Quimperlé les rias awaits you for a dinner for two: l’Atelier Mélanie. Run by the great-great-grandson of Mélanie Rouat, a great Breton cook from the early 20th century, this bistronomic restaurant offers a timeless experience. Flavours that perpetuate the tradition of its ancestor, but revisited with today's tastes.

Take the opportunity to discover or rediscover the shellfish of our rias.
