The Quimperlé region: A land of art, over the years

Logo Bretagne

A land of Art and History in South Finistère Sud, the pays de Quimperlé has inspired artists over the centuries. Its picturesque landscapes were brought to life by the painters of the Pont-Aven school, and its streets were the birthplace of true artists...

Matilin An Dall, Quimperlois bombard player

In the field of art, we must tell you about one of the most famous artists from the Quimperlé region. His name is Mathurin François Furic or Matilin An Dall. This very famous bombard player was born in 1789 in Quimperlé, rue Gauguin!

Look for the Breton souvenir shop to the left of the church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, and you're there! At the time, Mathurin's father ran a small bistro here. At a very young age, Mathurin Furic caught smallpox and went blind, hence his name Matilin An Dall, which means Mathurin the blind in Breton. He later became a professional musician and played the bombard, accompanied by Jean La Chapelle, Yann ar Chapel, on the biniou.

La ville de Quimperlé en Finistère Sud est une ville historique.

A true virtuoso, he composed traditional tunes which he played at Breton festivals, pardons and weddings. With his partner, they even took part in a play in Paris. Public figures came to hear them, and they even played for Napoleon III in 1858 during a visit to Quimper.

In Clohars-Carnoët in Finistère, betwenn the Laïta Valley et Kérou Beach in Le Pouldu. The route begins at the Maison-Musée Gauguin, on the very spot where Marie Henry's inn, La Buvette de la Plage, once stood. It was here that the painters of the Pont-Aven school stayed in 1889: Paul Gauguin, Paul Sérusier, Meijer de Haan, Charles Filiger and Maxime Maufra...

The itinerary is divided into two loops, one of 2 kilometres, accessible to people with reduced mobility with an accompanying adult, and the other of 5 kilometres. Stops along the coastal path - the GR34 - allow visitors to discover the paintings of these artists, as well as the places that inspired them at the end of the 19th century, and so immerse themselves in the inspiring atmosphere of Le Pouldu.

L'Artère, a creative place with divergent branches

Opposite the Maison des Archers, a historic monument in the rue Dom Maurice in Quimperlé, a black and gold shopfront catches the eye and reveals its identity: « L’Artère, a creative place with divergent ramifications».

Co-founder Mallaurie Charles talks us through her leitmotiv: an exhibition space dedicated to emerging contemporary art, but not just that... It's the ideal place to discover the artistic creations of minorities.

In addition to the exhibition space on the ground floor, Mallaurie runs workshops on collage, cyanotype and shared plastic arts. With a double master's degree in visual arts and gender studies, she is keen to help minorities emancipate themselves through creativity and well-being.
